Building Leadership

Phoebe Lewis, Principal

Phoebe Lewis, principal, has wanted to be an educator for as long as she can remember. Growing up with both parents as educators, Phoebe always knew her calling was to help young people learn. After attending the University of Kansas and earning a bachelor’s degree in reading and elementary education, she began her student teaching career in Blue Valley. From that moment, she knew Blue Valley was her home.

Her first teaching position was sixth grade at Overland Trail Middle School, where she taught for eight years, covering every subject except math. Phoebe earned a master’s degree in reading specialization from the University of Kansas and later a specialist degree in administration from Baker University. She served as assistant principal at Overland Trail Middle School for three years before becoming principal there for five years. She joined Pleasant Ridge Middle School as principal in fall 2013, where she has made her home.

Outside of school, Phoebe enjoys spending time with her husband, Mike, and their two daughters, Becca and Amanda. Her free time is often filled with outdoor activities, reading, socializing with friends and family, and focusing on health-related pursuits.

Phoebe is passionate about middle school and the students she serves. She believes middle school educators have a unique opportunity to help young people deepen their understanding of themselves, their goals and dreams, and their role in the world beyond the school walls.

As a visible principal, Phoebe says the best part of her job is visiting students throughout the school. She strives to know every student personally, and every student knows her. Her motto is, “Stay positive, maintain communication and do the right thing.” She often says, “It’s a great day to be a bulldog!”

Derek Adams, Assistant Principal

Derek Adams has been in education for more than 20 years. After earning degrees in English and secondary education from the University of Missouri-Kansas City, Adams taught high school English in the Shawnee Mission district for 13 years. During that time, he coached boys and girls soccer, sponsored the student council, and led the district’s mentoring program. He also earned master’s degrees in curriculum and instruction and administration from Emporia State University and Baker University, respectively. He then transitioned to Blue Valley as an assistant principal at Blue Valley Northwest, Blue Valley West, and Blue Valley Middle School before joining Pleasant Ridge.

Adams is married to another Blue Valley educator and has five children. He believes it takes a village to create a productive, supportive school. All members of the school community, including students, are vital contributors to each child’s experience. His ongoing goal is to create an environment where all students can have their best day.

“Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all.” — Aristotle
